An Act of Character

Some years ago, I observed an act of character that touched me very deeply. I shall never forget it. It was simply a public declaration of love.

I was attending a science convention in Montreal. The chairman, and host, was a friend of mine. In August, the city of Montreal was at it’s best. It was alive with residents and tourists alike celebrating the joys of summer and the events and festivities that go along with it. The conference had been well attended. The grand finale was the annual banquet scheduled for the evening of second last day. That was an occasion not to be missed. It turned out to be the one banquet in my life that I remember with absolute clarity. No-one expected what took place that evening - not even me.

The grande banquet hall began to fill up. There was anticipation and excitement in the air. The ladies were dressed in cocktail and evening dresses. The men were in their Sunday best suits. No jeans here. The tables were set-out exquisitely and everyone’s place was identified with a silver nameplate. Only the highest of society were invited to attend. Most were scientists and technical personnel from governments and universities, while others came from the business sector. We even had a few members from City Council. Each lady was presented with a long-stemmed red rose as she was escorted to her table. An orchestra played light music. The mood was good. The menus were awesome.

The chairman of the conference was a skilled organizer and orator. He was someone whom I admired and respected. He was also quite young, only in his thirties. The attendees could see him and other dignitaries gradually take their places at the head table. After the large heavy doors were gently closed by hotel staff, he welcomed everyone to the convention and the evening’s festivities. He was carrying a very large bouquet of red roses. He began by saying that he wished to make an announcement.

He said, “I want to tell everyone assembled here tonight, and especially my dear beautiful wife, how much I love her”. Then, he turned directly to face his wife who was sitting with family at a nearby table. He said, softly, “Darling, I love you with all my heart, with all my soul and with all my strength. And, no-matter what happens from now on, that will never change. I will always be by your side. You mean the world to me. I want you to be by my side, as well.”

At that moment, he left the head table without saying a word. He walked towards his wife; kissed her deeply; handed her the roses and carried her back to the head table in his arms. An attendant followed them with her wheelchair.

She had been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and had lost her ability to walk. She was twenty-seven.
